Bible Verses about Three Characteristics of God

Part IV: GOD is REDEEMER

Here is a list of Bible verses about God as the redeemer of humanity. Specifically, the quoted Bible verses come from the books of Isaiah and Micah of the Old Testament, and from the gospels of Luke and John and letters of Paul to the Philippians and Colossians of the New Testament. Many of the quoted Bible verses come from the book of Isaiah, and the book contains important messianic verses written in a powerful literary style that is both heart-warming and heart-breaking. The quoted gospel verses and portions of Paul’s letters tend to validate the most important parts of the messianic verses. At the end of each Bible verse or group of Bible verses is a phrase interpretation by the author of the website.

Book of Isaiah

“All right then, the Lord himself will give you the sign. Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel (which means ’God is with us.’).”

(Isaiah 7:14 / NLT 2007) --- Bible verse about a prophecy concerning the virgin birth of God’s chosen Redeemer who will live with God’s people on earth, literally

“The people who walk in darkness will see a great light. For those who live in a land of deep darkness, a light will shine. You will enlarge the nation of Israel, and its people will rejoice.”

(Isaiah 9:2-3 / NLT 2016) --- Bible verses about the coming of God’s chosen Redeemer for humanity during a time of great disorder and utter confusion and which imply an expanded house of Israel that includes the Gentiles

“For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

(Isaiah 9:6 / NLT 2016) --- Bible verse about the birth of God’s chosen Redeemer whose rule reflects who God is

“Out of the stump of David’s family will grow a shoot – yes, a new Branch bearing fruit from the old root. And the Spirit of the Lord will rest on him – the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. He will delight in obeying the Lord. He will not judge by appearance nor make a decision based on hearsay. He will give justice to the poor and make fair decisions for the exploited. The earth will shake at the force of his word, and one breath from his mouth will destroy the wicked. He will wear righteousness like a belt and truth like an undergarment.”

(Isaiah 11:1-5 / NLT 2016) --- Bible verses about the human ancestral lineage of God’s chosen Redeemer as originating from the royal family of King David and about a Redeemer who is filled with the Spirit of God and, consequently, who will shape the course of human history through justice, righteousness and truth, and His teachings

“In that day the heir to David’s throne will be a banner of salvation to all the world. The nations will rally to him, and the land where he lives will be a glorious place.”

(Isaiah 11:10 / NLT 2016) --- Bible verse about God’s chosen Redeemer as the leader of people living throughout the world which, in turn, shows that the Redeemer rules over a vast territory which manifests diversity, and which implies an extremely enlarged and expanded house of Israel

“Look at my servant, whom I strengthen. He is my chosen one, who pleases me. I have put my Spirit upon him. He will bring justice to the nations. He will not shout or raise his voice in public. He will not crush the weakest reed or put out a flickering candle. He will bring justice to all who have been wronged. He will not falter or lose heart until justice prevails throughout the earth. Even distant lands beyond the sea will wait for his instruction.”

(Isaiah 42:1-4 / NLT 2016) --- Bible verses about God’s chosen Servant who will bring justice to the entire world, a justice not driven by anger but based on kindness and strength of character

“Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you. I have called you by name; you are mine. When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Saviour.”

(Isaiah 43:1-3 / NLT 2016) --- Bible verses about God as a tender-hearted, adoptive Redeemer unashamed to call us his own and to defend us

(Isaiah 43:10-11 / NLT 2016) --- Bible verses about an emphatic and categorical declaration by God that He is the one and only God who is Lord and Saviour

“This is what the Lord says - your Redeemer and Creator: ’I am the Lord, who made all things. I alone stretched out the heavens. Who was with me when I made the earth?’”

(Isaiah 44:24 / NLT 2007) --- Bible verse about God as our personal Redeemer and Creator of the heavens and earth

“Sing for joy, O heavens! Rejoice, O earth! Burst into song, O mountains! For the Lord has comforted his people and will have compassion on them in their suffering.”

(Isaiah 49:13 / NLT 2016) --- Bible verse about the need to celebrate, ecstatically, the redemptive action of God for His people

“See, my servant will prosper; he will be highly exalted. But many were amazed when they saw him. His face was so disfigured he seemed hardly human, and from his appearance, one would scarcely know he was a man. And he will startle many nations. Kings will stand speechless in his presence. For they will see what they had not been told; they will understand what they had not heard about.”

(Isaiah 52:13-15 / NLT 2016) --- Bible verses about God’s Servant and Redeemer who suffered an extremely violent physical abuse and about His glorious, game-changing triumph in the future as a result of His sufferings

“Who has believed our message? To whom has the Lord revealed his powerful arm? My servant grew up in the Lord’s presence like a tender green shoot, like a root in dry ground. There was nothing beautiful or majestic about his appearance, nothing to attract us to him. He was despised and rejected – a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief. We turned our backs on him and looked the other way. He was despised, and we did not care. Yet it was our weaknesses he carried; it was our sorrows that weighed him down. And we thought his troubles were a punishment from God, a punishment for his own sins! But he was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed.”

(Isaiah 53:1-5 / NLT 2016) --- Bible verses about the Redeemer as one who was cared for and trained by God and who was able to take all the injuries and insults in order to save humanity from its sins

“’Enlarge your house; build an extension. Spread out your home, and spare no expense! For you will soon be bursting at the seams... Fear not; you will no longer live in shame. Don’t be afraid; there is no more disgrace for you… For your Creator will be your husband; the Lord of Heaven’s Armies is his name! He is your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel, the God of all the earth. For the Lord has called you back from your grief – as though you were a young wife abandoned by her husband,’ says your God.”

(Isaiah 54:2-6 / NLT 2016) --- Bible verses about God’s love for the house of Israel as a husband loves his wife and which imply a very enlarged and expanded house of Israel “that will be bursting at the seams”

“The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is upon me, for the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to comfort the broken-hearted and to proclaim that captives will be released and prisoners will be freed. He has sent me to tell those who mourn that the time of the Lord’s favour has come, and with it, the day of God’s anger against their enemies. To all who mourn in Israel, he will give a crown of beauty for ashes, a joyous blessing instead of mourning, festive praise instead of despair. In their righteousness, they will be like great oaks that the Lord has planted for his own glory.”

(Isaiah 61:1-3 / NLT 2016) --- Bible verses about God’s chosen Redeemer as the “good news of great joy” for the lowly, the oppressed and the demoralized
