Bible Verses about Three Characteristics of God

Part I: Introduction and GOD is CREATOR

It is a Christian belief that the Bible is a book which contains the Word of God as written by people whom God has chosen in order to reveal his thoughts and emotions, teachings and values, plans and wishes. As such, the Bible provides some information about God. And the Bible tells us that God is not only the main character or the star in the Bible story. He is The Story, the Word that was made flesh who is the master of the universe.

From the Bible, then, one can see some of the characteristics of God. God is a creator, one who created all things whether these things are living things or non-living things, visible or invisible. He is the Lord of the universe and the Lord of history. Another outstanding characteristic of God is love. He, in fact, is love, as the scripture passage 1 John 4:16 states quite clearly. That love was manifested, quite poignantly, when God's chosen redeemer assumed the state of a human being in order to fulfill His earthly mission of dying on the cross and rising from the dead to save humanity and free us from the bondage of sin. And this is the third characteristic of God. He is a redeemer, the one who saved the world. That God offered His Son as a ransom for many is eloquent testimony to the incomprehensible love of God through Christ.

GOD is CREATOR

Here is a list of Bible verses about God as the creator of all things, whether these things are living or non-living, visible or invisible. Specifically, the quoted Bible verses come from the books of Genesis, Psalms and Isaiah, the gospels of Mark and John, and the letters of Paul to the Romans and Colossians. All of the Bible verses quoted from these sources provide a description, an account, a declaration or a teaching about God as creator of everything. At the end of each Bible verse or group of Bible verses is a phrase interpretation by the author of the website.

Book of Genesis

“In the beginning, when God created the universe, the earth was formless and desolate. The raging ocean that covered everything was engulfed in total darkness, and the Spirit of God was moving over the water. Then God commanded, ’Let there be light’ – and light appeared. God was pleased with what he saw.”

(Genesis 1:1-4 / GNT 2017) --- Bible verses about God and the beginning of the creation of the universe

“Then God commanded, ’Let there be a dome to divide the water and to keep it in two separate places’ – and it was done. So God made a dome, and it separated the water under it from the water above it. He named the dome ’Sky.’ Evening passed and morning came – that was the second day. Then God commanded, ’Let the water below the sky come together in one place, so that the land will appear’ – and it was done. He named the land ’Earth,’ and the water which had come together he named ’Sea.’ And God was pleased with what he saw.”

(Genesis 1:6-10 / GNT 2017) --- Bible verses about God and the creation of the heavens or the sky and earth

“Then God said, ’And now we will make human beings; they will be like us and resemble us. They will have power over the fish, the birds and all animals, domestic and wild, large and small.’ So God created human beings, making them to be like himself. He created them male and female, blessed them, and said, ’Have many children, so that your descendants will live all over the earth and bring it under their control.’”

(Genesis 1:26-28 / GNT 2017) --- Bible verses about the creation of human beings in the image and likeness of God and who were designated by God as responsible rulers of the earth

Book of Psalms

“How clearly the sky reveals God’s glory! How plainly it shows what he has done! Each day announces it to the following day; each night repeats it to the next. No speech or words are used, no sound is heard; yet their message goes out to all the world and is heard to the ends of the earth.”

(Psalm 19:1-4 / GNT 2017) --- Bible verses about the deafeningly quite but eloquent day-to-day testimony of the sky about the glory of God as revealed in His creation

“The voice of the Lord is heard on the seas; the glorious God thunders, and his voice echoes over the ocean. The voice of the Lord is heard in all its might and majesty…. The Lord rules over the deep waters; he rules as king forever.”

(Psalm 29:3-4 and 10 / GNT 2017) --- Bible verses about God as Lord and King over all kinds of created things forever

“Your throne, O Lord, has been firm from the beginning, and you existed before time began.”

(Psalm 93:2 / GNT 2017) --- Bible verse about God as Supreme King even before all things and time were created
