Bible Verses about Five Characteristics of God

Part I: GOD is MAJESTY

This second article on the characteristics of God provides a substantial number of Bible verses related to five traits or characteristics. It can be considered as a continuation of the first article entitled, “Bible Verses about Three Characteristics of God,” which provided Bible verses about “God is Creator,” “God is Love,” and “God is Redeemer.” The five characteristics mentioned in this article are the following: “God is Majesty,” “God is Mercy, Love and Compassion,” “God is Holy,” “God is Priest” and “God is God.” The article has 4 pages. Page 1 deals with “God is Majesty,” pages 2 and 3 contain verses about “God is Mercy, Love and Compassion,” and page 4 provides Bible verses about “God is Holy,” “God is Priest,” and “God is God.” Below is a list of Bible verses about the incomprehensible majesty of God. Specifically, the quoted Bible verses are taken from the books of Exodus, Psalms and Isaiah of the Old Testament and from the second letter of Peter of the New Testament. These quoted Bible verses provide a description or testimony of God’s infinite majesty, a statement of human desire to see God’s majesty or a description of a meditation on the majesty of God.

Book of Exodus

“Then Moses said, ’Now show me your glory.’ And the Lord said, ’I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name, the Lord, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.’ ’But,’ he said, ’you cannot see my face, for no one may see me and live.’ Then the Lord said, ’There is a place near me where you may stand on a rock. When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by. Then I will remove my hand and you will see my back; but my face must not be seen….’ Then the Lord came down in the cloud and stood there with him and proclaimed his name, the Lord. And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, ’The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin.’”

(Exodus 33:18-23 and Exodus 34:5-7 / NIV® 2011) --- Bible verses about the glory and majesty of God as revealed to Moses on Mount Sinai

Book of Psalms

“Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens. Through the praise of children and infants you have established a stronghold against your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger. When I consider the heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them? You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor.”

(Psalm 8:1-5 / NIV® 2011) --- Bible verses about a psalmist’s contemplation on the majesty of God and how beautifully incomprehensible it is for him that God shared His majesty to human beings as He “crowned them with glory and honor”

“One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple.”

(Psalm 27:4 / NIV® 2011) --- Bible verse about a heart’s intense desire and a single-minded purpose to witness the majesty of God

“The Lord reigns, he is robed in majesty; the Lord is robed in majesty and armed with strength; Indeed, the world is established, firm and secure. Your throne was established long ago; you are from all eternity.”

(Psalm 93:1-2 / NIV® 2011) --- Bible verses about a lyrical note on “God is eternal majesty”

Book of Isaiah

“In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. And they were calling to one another: ’Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.’”

(Isaiah 6:1-3 / NIV® 2011) --- Bible verses about the infinite brilliance of the majesty of God as indicated by the action of angels who covered their faces with two of their wings

Second Letter of Peter

“For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. He received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, ’This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.’ We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him [Jesus] on the sacred mountain.”

(2 Peter 1:16-18 / NIV® 2011) --- Bible verses about Peter’s eyewitness account of the transfiguration of Jesus and the love of God the Father for His Son, Jesus
