Philatelic Terms and Abbreviations

NEVER HINGED (NH): A stamp which has never been attached to a hinge

 

OVERPRINT (OVPT): A printed mark applied by the post office on the original stamp which makes the original stamp an overprint stamp

 

PACKET: A small package which contains an assortment of stamps

 

PAIR: Two identical stamps in their original connected form

 

PERFIN: A stamp with craftily designed punched holes on it

 

PERFORATION or PERFORATE (PERF): The punched holes – the size of a pinhead – on the stamps of the sheet which make it easy to separate the stamps (See IMPERFORATE)

PHILATELIST: A specialist in the field of stamp collecting; a term which is often associated with a stamp collector

 

PLATE NUMBER: The number which indicates the order when a particular sheet of stamps was printed
