Part II: God is Salvation

Selected Verses from Isaiah Chapters 7, 9, 10, 11, 12, 40 and 42

“Then the Lord spoke again to Ahaz, saying ’Ask a sign for yourself from the Lord your God; make it deep as Sheol or high as heaven.’ But Ahaz said, ’I will not ask nor will I test the Lord!’ Then he [Isaiah] said, ’Listen now, O house of David! Is it too slight a thing for you to try the patience of men, that you will try the patience of my God as well? Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel.’”

(Isaiah 7:10-14 / NASB 2000) --- Bible verses about a prophecy concerning the virgin birth of God’s chosen redeemer who will live with God’s people on earth, literally, and which show that Isaiah appeared exasperated with King Ahaz

“The people who walk in darkness

Will see a great light;

Those who live in a dark land,

The light will shine on them.

You shall multiply the nation,

You shall increase their gladness….”

(Isaiah 9:2-3 / NASB 2000) --- Bible verses about the coming of God’s chosen redeemer for humanity during a time of great disorder and utter confusion, and which imply an expanded house of Israel that includes the Gentiles

“For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.”

(Isaiah 9:6 / NASB 2000) --- Bible verse about the birth of God’s chosen redeemer whose rule reflects who God is

“Now in that day the remnant of Israel, and those of the house of Jacob who have escaped, will never again rely on the one who struck them, but will truly rely on the Lord, the Holy One of Israel.

   A remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob,

   to the mighty God.

   For though your people, O Israel, may be like the sand of

   the sea,

   Only a remnant within them will return;

   A destruction is determined, overflowing with

   righteousness.”

(Isaiah 10:20-22 / NASB 2000) --- Bible verses about a justice-seeking God who will administer a punishment filled with so much righteousness that it will purify his chosen people

“Then a shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse,

And a branch from his roots will bear fruit.

The Spirit of the Lord will rest on Him,

The spirit of wisdom and understanding,

The spirit of counsel and strength,

The spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.

And He will delight in the fear of the Lord,

And He will not judge by what His eyes see,

Nor make a decision by what His ears hear…” (NASB 2000)

“… he will judge the poor righteously

and execute justice for the oppressed of the land.

He will strike the land with a scepter from his mouth,

and he will kill the wicked with a command from his lips.

Righteousness will be a belt around his hips;

faithfulness will be a belt around his waist.” (CSB 2018)

(Isaiah 11:1-3 / NASB 2000 and Isaiah 11:4-5 / CSB 2018) --- Bible verses about the human ancestral lineage of God’s chosen redeemer as originating from the royal family of King David and about a redeemer who is filled with the Spirit of God and, consequently, who will shape the course of human history through justice, righteousness and truth, and his teachings

“In that day the heir to David’s throne will be a banner of salvation to all the world. The nations will rally to him, for the land where he lives will be a glorious place.”

(Isaiah 11:10 / NLT 1997) --- Bible verse about God’s chosen redeemer as the leader of people living throughout the world which, in turn, shows that the redeemer rules over a vast territory which manifests diversity, and which implies an extremely enlarged and expanded house of Israel

“In that day you will sing:

’Praise the Lord!

He was angry with me, but now he comforts me.’” (NLT 1997)

“’Behold, God is my salvation,

I will trust and not be afraid;

For the Lord God is my strength and song,

And He has become my salvation.’” (NASB 2000)

(Isaiah 12:1 / NLT 1997 and Isaiah 12:2 / NASB 2000) --- Bible verses about a song praising God as one’s redeemer, the only true source of salvation

“’Comfort, O comfort My people’ says your God.

’Speak kindly to Jerusalem; And call out to her, that her warfare has ended,

That her iniquity has been removed,

That she has received of the Lord’s hand

Double for all her sins….’

Get yourself up on a high mountain,

O Zion, bearer of good news,

Lift up your voice mightily,

O Jerusalem, bearer of good news;

Lift it up, do not fear.

Say to the cities of Judah,

’Here is your God!’”

(Isaiah 40:1-2 and 9 / NASB 2000) --- Bible verses about the incomprehensible great love of a justice-seeking God for the city of David, gifting it as the venue for the announcement of the “good news of great joy” for everyone

“Behold, My Servant, whom I uphold;

My chosen one in whom My soul delights.

I have put My Spirit upon Him;

He will bring forth justice to the nations.

He will not cry out or raise His voice,

Nor make His voice heard in the street.

A bruised reed He will not break

And a dimly burning wick He will not extinguish;

He will faithfully bring forth justice.

He will not be disheartened or crushed

Until He has established justice in the earth;

And the coastlands will wait expectantly for His law.”

(Isaiah 42:1-4 / NASB 2000) --- Bible verses about God’s chosen servant who will bring justice to the entire world, a justice not driven by anger but based on kindness and strength of character
