Expressions Arts for God’s Sake: The Cross of Christ and The Suffering Servant Triumphant

The article, which was first published in the Blog Expressions section for Holy Week 2024, contains faith expression artworks for God’s sake. “Expressions Art for God’s Sake” is based on the idea that if there is art for art’s sake, then there must expressions art for God’s sake. The artworks on display are based on Bible verses Isaiah 52:13-15. In the NIVUK translation, the verses go this way: “See, my servant will act wisely; he will be raised and lifted up and highly exalted. Just as there were many who were appalled at him – his appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any human being and his form marred beyond human likeness – so he will sprinkle many nations, and kings will shut their mouths because of him. For what they were not told, they will see, and what they have not heard, they will understand.”

“Behold, my servant will prosper; he will be exalted and raised to great heights. Just as many people recoiled at the sight of him— he was so disfigured that he no longer appeared to be human— so will he startle many nations, and kings will be speechless before him. For they will see what they had not been told, and they will contemplate what they had not previously heard.” (Isaiah 52:13-15 / NCB)

“Behold, my servant shall deal prudently, he shall be exalted and extolled, and be very high. As many were astonied at thee; his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men: So shall he sprinkle many nations; the kings shall shut their mouths at him: for that which had not been told them shall they see; and that which they had not heard shall they consider.” (Isaiah 52:13-15 / KJV)

“See, my servant shall prosper; he shall be exalted and lifted up, and shall be very high. Just as there were many who were astonished at him—so marred was his appearance, beyond human semblance, and his form beyond that of mortals— so he shall startle many nations; kings shall shut their mouths because of him; for that which had not been told them they shall see, and that which they had not heard they shall contemplate.” (Isaiah 52:13-15 / NRSVCE)
