The Birth of Jesus

The birth of Jesus Christ was prophesied by Isaiah and Micah during the Old Testament time, and these prophecies were fulfilled during the New Testament time as attested to by the gospel writers Matthew, Mark and Luke.

One of the prophecies in the book of Isaiah had to do with a sign. The people of God were looking for a solution to the problems confronting them. They lived at a time of great disorder from within and from without, and their covenant with God was at a breaking point. Through the prophet Isaiah, God sent this message to King Ahaz, and the message was about a virgin who will be pregnant and have a son to be called Immanuel which meant “God is with us.” (Isaiah 7:14)

Related to the message in Isaiah 7:14 was the verse about a great light (Isaiah 9:2). It was a light that people in deep darkness will see and that will shine on them.

The great light was also mentioned in chapter 60 of the book of Isaiah. The coming of the great light meant the future glory of Jerusalem (Isaiah 60:1-2), the city of King David.

The prophecy found in Micah 5:2 was a direct, positive statement about the coming of the savior of the Jews. The savior, the ruler that God will send to his people was to come from Bethlehem.

One of the gospel writers who wrote about the birth of Jesus Christ was Luke. In chapter 2 verses 8 to 18 of his gospel, Luke wrote about the appearance of an angel to some shepherds in the field one night. The angel announced to the shepherds about the birth of the savior (messiah) they have been waiting for and told them where they can find their savior. The shepherds wanted to confirm the reality of their strange experience with an angel and went to look for the baby in the town of David, which was Bethlehem. There, they found infant Jesus wrapped in cloths in a manger with Mary and Joseph.
